A couple of weeks ago, our Dynamics developers, Linus Österberg and Mikhail Bogunov, went to Amsterdam to participate in Extreme 365. The most important thing that we took with us from the conference is that Microsoft now is investing in Common Data Service and PowerApps.

Common Data Service – the platform that talks to your other business systems

Common Data Service is a platform that allows you to store data in a secure and cloud-based space. When using Common Data Service, you can easily share data with your other business systems through so called connectors (ready connections between different systems and the platform). Nowadays, there is a whole library of connectors in Azure, which gives you great opportunities to start connecting your systems already without having to write code.

Before Common Data Service existed, developers had to connect different business systems by using code.

With help from Common Data Service, it’s now easy to connect different business systems, through drag and drop functions.

PowerApps - for quick and easy app development personalized to your business needs

PowerApps is a set of services and connections that allow you to quickly create applications that are personalized to your specific business needs. By either storing data in the underlying data platform (Common Data Service) or in different data sources such as SharePoint, Excel, Office 365, Dynamics 365 or SQL Server, you can now connect PowerApps to your business data in an easy and convenient way.

Applications created with PowerApps now allow you to transform your manual business processes into digital and automated processes. Many of the apps are standardized and already contain ready-made functions, while other apps are completely empty so you can build the app according to your specific requirements and needs. The requirement to be able to code has been considerably reduced.

All apps, created in PowerApps are now dynamic so you can easily run them in a web browser or on a mobile device without any problems.

Why should my business invest in Common Data Service and PowerApps?

  • Easy data storage – both metadata and data are stored in the cloud, so you no longer have to worry about how your data is stored.

  • Easy to protect data  as your data is stored according to a structured model, it's easy to control the permissions linked to your data. Users can only see the information you give them access to.

  • Easy access to Dynamics 365 data – your data from any Dynamics 365 application can now be stored in the Common Data Service, which allows you to easily create apps that access all your Dynamics 365 data.

  • Smart metadata features  you can now use data types and relationships directly from PowerApps.

  • Possibility for Just In Time  your data can be retrieved directly, if necessary.
  • The platforms have become more open  it allows you to use the data across the system's boundaries in a completely different way compared to earlier.
