Forum Syd organises Swedish aid systems on a global scale. Releye provides aid organisations with the help they need in order to take the next step in their development.

Forum Syd, which distributes more than a quarter-billion SEK per year in aid, is in the process of establishing a global system that greatly enhances the opportunity to monitor aid projects all the way from application to completion. Behind the custom-made version of the system Fronteye CRM is the supplier Releye.

Forum Syd, headquartered in Sweden, and with regional offices in Kenya, Cambodia and Nicaragua, and dozens of local offices around the world, has been dealing in recent years with a rapidly growing number of applications for locally-driven projects from so-called Non Governmental Organisations - NGOs. The aim of such projects is that people themselves should be allowed to influence their own situations.

- An increasingly decentralised aid organisation has led to increased demands on us as a central organisation to provide the most efficient reporting as possible to our client called Sida, and eventually the government as well - in such a context, Releye’s system called Fronteye plays a crucial role. I expect that we are only experiencing the tip of the iceberg of what the development of an efficient IT system can mean for aid programmes throughout the world," says Andrew Black, the Planning Manager at Forum Syd. Forum Syd has around 250 million SEK in aid money each year to distribute. This money is financed through taxes. Of these funds, approximately 200 million SEK goes to organisations that run a total of 500 projects worldwide. Projects are led by everything from major aid organisations such as IOGT-NTO to smaller ones such as the City Friends Society called Jönköping-Bangladesh. These, in turn, have a number of local partners scattered all over the world.

In addition, Forum Syd, through regional offices and local offices throughout the world, has a rapidly growing number of applications from NGOs to deal with. Today, approximately 60 million SEK is distributed annually as development aid to this sector and the NGO sector is growing rapidly. A good example is when Forum Syd searched for two partner organisations for their activities in Cambodia, where human rights are high on the agenda, and as many as 66 applications were received. As a direct effect of a rapidly growing number of NGO-led projects, Forum Syd's need increases for an effective way to ensure the quality of assistance projects all the way from application to completion.

- In addition to the large amounts of information that must be structured in a logical manner, support also should be integrated with other key systems such as our financial system and be easily accessible even if there is low bandwidth available. Here, we felt that Releye and the Fronteye system were the supplier and solution best able to meet all of our requirements," says Jaana Korvela, project manager for the development and implementation of the new business support system.

The implementation of Fronteye is being carried out full steam ahead. Apart from Sweden, which has been the test market, the business support system has been implemented in the Balkans, Cambodia and Nicaragua.

- In a world where more and more compete for aid money, it becomes ever more important for various aid organisations to effectively be able to show how every bit of money is used. Forum Syd is an excellent example of how an effective business support system can really streamline management, control and monitoring of various aid projects," says Jan Wengholt, Project Manager at Forum Syd.

He estimates that it is only a matter of time before more aid organisations follow Forum Syd's example.

- Previously, it has been relatively complicated to customise systems according to the needs of individual organisations, yet today, the rapid development in the area of CRM has led to a development organisation being able to, with relatively little resources, create an effective business support system," says Jan Wengholt.
